Is learning for life or just to make a living?

Each of us is learning something new with each passing day. When we were too young to go to school, we learnt how to walk, cycle, and play. And after we’d started attending classes at school, we learnt how to make friends and imitate our teachers. And now we are learning how to cope with a pandemic. Learning is verily a never-ending process. It’s for life, for eternity. But learning, without an iota of doubt, also helps us make a living.

Let’s discuss the basics first. It is a less-known fact that the word ‘education’ (often used interchangeably with learning) is derived from the Latin word ‘educare’ which means ‘to bring out’. This means that a teacher’s job is not to keep feeding a student with information, but rather make the student discover his hidden potentials. When a student gets to know what he is capable of doing, he will start enjoying the learning process.

When a student gets to know what he is capable of doing, he will start enjoying the learning process.

In other words, if a student finds it hard to memorize a few English words, an English coach could try to figure out what the student’s hobbies are. The latter might like singing or sports. And if the student happens to be interested in singing, why not he be asked to compose a song incorporating the new words? This way the student will not only retain the words but will also come to realise that learning can be made interesting. He may decide to make a career in songwriting. Who knows?

Furthermore, teachers also feel necessitated to keep themselves updated with what’s happening in the world. Teachers, it's important to note, are learners as well. So, if a teacher feels he has learnt a lot, he will not be able to grow further.

Thus, it is important to keep oneself open to different ideas and suggestions. In the words of the great scientist Albert Einstein, ‘The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.’ Let this be food for thought for the learner in you.
